Visy, Pratt fined $36m over price-fixing

Billionaire Richard Pratt and his Visy group companies have been fined a record $36 million for price fixing in the cardboard market, in a case the Federal Court says is the worst in Australia's corporate history.

Mr Pratt's right-hand man, former Visy chief executive Harry Debney, has been fined $1.5 million and former general manager Rod Carroll was fined $500,000. Federal Court judge Justice Peter Heerey said the penalty imposed on Visy was twice the highest previous fine imposed by his court. ``That is reflective of the fact that this must be, by far, the most serious cartel case to come before the court in the 30-plus years in which price fixing has been prohibited by statute,'' Justice Heerey said in his decision. A Visy spokesman said the company respected the decision.

As immigration peaked as a political issue last year and local governments began to adopt a variety of restrictive measures, a number of economic commentators (myself included) noted that this was a dangerous policy to pursue given a weakening economy. Policies which drove immigrants away from restrictionist areas not only cut off the commercial business provided by those populations but also undermined housing markets. Even where immigrant households were not primarily homeowners, their presence in the market as tenants helped support overall housing demand and provided needed cash flows to landlords struggling to pay mortgages. With a housing-led downturn taking shape, immigrant departure seemed potentially disastrous.

But one has to wonder whether that's the proper causation.

MTV Does Another NYE in NYC

MTV rang in the New Year with another star-studded party in their studio overlooking Times Square. Not only did the revelers have a prime spot to view the ball drop, but they were treated to performances by Kid Rock (with Rev Run), Mary J. Blige, Good Charlotte and more. I guess that means Joel didn't get to start the new year with a kiss from Nicole, but I'm sure he'll make up for it back in LA. Cutie VJ Damien Fahey looked dapper in his three piece suit for the big night. The hostess of the party was Tila Tequila, who took the opportunity to announce that her first shot at love didn't work out and she's doing another season of her reality dating show. Who's excited?

To see more from the party including Mary J. Blige, Wyclef Jean, Kid, Rev Run, Damien, Joel and others just read more

US Consumers Oblivious to GM Food Fears

Concerns over genetically modified foods have failed to make much impact in the United States, where consumers and the US media are less fired up about the issue than in Europe, activists say.

Dr Michael Hansen, a biologist with the major New York-based Consumers Union, says the media doesn't talk about GM issues and there is more apathy in the US.

"When the public is asked in the survey, a high percentage wants food labels," he said.

"They just don't realize the extent to which certain food such as corn or soybean are genetically engineered, and often they have not heard of any of these food safety concerns."

On Friday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy banned the only genetically modified crop grown in France, the Mon 810 maize produced by the US agriculture giant Monsanto.
